How to convert videos easily for your iPhone or iPod

Video playback on iPodsI have noticed that besides us geeks, mainstream owners of iPhones and iPods don't watch a lot of videos on their devices, either because they don't want to or they don't know how. I tend to believe it's due to the latter.

While I don't tend to watch full length movies on my iPhone, I do enjoy catching up on shows on the bus or in bed as I fall asleep.

Not only will your commute (if you use public transportation, not while you're driving) go by quicker, but you'll have start to look forward to it.

Mac

The process on a Mac is extremely easy:

  1. Get VirtualHub. This may be a bit difficult to do since it's been discontinued. If you can't find it, you can build it using the source code. Trust me, it's really really easy to do.
  2. Open VirtualHub and drag in your video file(s).
  3. Select the iPod tab or iPod under the Convert To drop down list.
  4. Click Go!
  5. Then just drag the new .mp4 file(s) over into iTunes or into your connected iPod.

Conversion should only take a few minutes (the most it's taken me was 10 minutes for a movie). You can play with the video quality settings, I usually set it as high.

PC

I haven't used a PC in months so I'm working off memory.

  1. Get Videora.
  2. Click the Convert tab on the left.
  3. Click Transcode New Video and find your file(s).
  4. Click the Setup tab on the left.
  5. Give your video a Title and pick the Quality Profile MPEG-4/320x240/768kbps Stereo/128kbps. Use that as the base an experiment with the video quality.
  6. Click Start.
  7. When it's done, drag the new .mp4 file(s) over to iTunes or your connected iPod.

As you can tell, it's not nearly as easy as on a Mac (tends to be the case), but it only takes a minute to set up.

If you have an easier method or are having trouble, let me know below.
