Slow Windows Startup? Here’s a tip - MSCONFIG
Does your computer take forever to startup or a lot longer than when you got it?
This is one of the most common problems a Windows user faces. After a few months, you notice it takes longer and longer for your comptuer to start up.
You might try defragmenting your hard-drive, which I’ll go into more depth in another article, but it doesn’t do much.
Here is a great method that I have been using for years. Not only will it help with slow startup time, but it can also help with spyware/malware (read: annoying popups from programs or advertisements).
Walkthrough
This may seem complicated but it’s faily easy. Trust me, I’ve had to walk people through this over the phone.
- Click Start.
- Click Run.
- Type “msconfig” without the quotes.
- Click the Startup tab at the top right of the window, under the X to close the window.
- Under the Startup Item column is the name of the Item that starts up. You have two options: if you know what the item is, you can disable it, and if you don’t, google each and you’ll easily find out what it is and if it’s safe to turn it off.
- Once you’re done, close the window. This will open a new one that’ll ask you to restart/reboot. Do it.
- When you’re computer restarts, you’ll notice it faster and the programs you deselected will not have run. You’ll also be greated by a prompt that notifies you that you had changed settings in MSCONFIG. You can click the check box and you won’t see it again.
That’s it! Leave me a note and let me know how it went.
